In this video, we’re uncovering the origins of Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night—a uniquely British tradition celebrated every 5th of November. The story takes us back to 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in an effort to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. Fawkes was caught guarding barrels of gunpowder beneath Parliament, and the infamous “Gunpowder Plot” was foiled.
In celebration of the King’s survival, bonfires were lit across London, marking the beginning of what would become an annual tradition. Over the centuries, Bonfire Night evolved, with effigies of Guy Fawkes being burned and fireworks becoming part of the spectacle.
Today, the skies across the UK light up each 5th of November in remembrance of this historic event. So, next time you gather around a bonfire or watch the fireworks, you’re taking part in a tradition that’s over 400 years old!
